The U.N. and the World Bank are offering an update to their assessment of the economic and environmental impacts of the timber industry.
In a report published Monday, the governments said the forestry industry contributes $1.3 trillion to the global economy and employs around 6.7 million people.
But the report also said the industry is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions globally, and is a major contributor to soil erosion, air pollution and land degradation.
The report said there is insufficient information to estimate how the forestry sector will affect the climate.
The report said the timber sector contributes more than 80 percent of global carbon emissions.
